New toys …. me likey!! And the latest addition to my arsenal is a cake slicer.
Never actually used a slicer before but I know I need one. WHY? Because I can never slice cakes properly regardless of how steady I hold my hand. Always had a secret envy toward all those people out there with food blogs of their own, producing great layered cakes (not to mention AWESOME FREAKIN photos).
To be honest I had no idea there was such a thing as a cake slicer until I walked into Pippos, the hobby store. They have a cake and baking section with a whole bunch of Wilton products and tools. I love going in there on Saturdays when R and I go to our regular cafe for Saturday morning brunch. What I like about Pippos is that they change their products accourding to every season and upcoming festival. In October they had a bunch of autumn themed cutters and cupcake toppers brought in. I admit I felt like buying the lot.
Then I discovered this curious looking tool with a guiter string stretched across it. R asked me what it was meant for and in my Miss-know-it-all voice I declared it was …. that it was a …. a DINGLE HOPPER!
Ahahahaa!! Sorry. Private Disney joke there.
I declared it was a cake slicer, not knowing that it sliced cakes the other way ~ horizontally ~ not into wedges. We stared at it for a moment and I nodded my head in a sage-like manner; Lording over the entire situation. Moments later I found out the truth when I flipped the box over and there was a photograph showing how to use it properly. It was expensive though, so we did not buy it that very day. I was determined to save up some cash from my weekly spends and return for it in the near future.
And then I popped into IKEA 4 weeks later and Eureka!
The minute I saw it I pounced on it. IT WAS A BARGAIN! € 5 and it came with added bonuses ~ not one but two piping bags, five nozzles and an icing scraper. Had never used an icing scraper before but now that I have one, I now need a rotating cake pedastel. *writes it down on wishlist.
Now all I gotta do is bake a cake and slice it into layers I suppose. Update to follow soon, so watch this space.
UPDATE :
Ok so I used the cake slicer and it wasn’t as easy to manouvre since there was no handle. Maybe I am using it wrong. Either way I came really close to tearing the cake and the edges were still jagged.
